If the PB Process was a fruit or vegetable .....? was created by Sally Ann Hart
I remember way back the original PB evaluation form posed the above question and I used to really enjoy reading the responses. Often people would offer an orange because 'the segments all come together to form something sweet yet simple', or an onion, because 'once you get through the outer layer there are lots of other layers to hold it all together'. And some people, who didn't worry about whether or not the spelling was correct would opt for a pomegranate, because 'there is so much to PBs and although it might be quite fidly to get into, the overall experience is both refreshing and healthy'! So, although this question may not appear on the evaluation that I tend to use today, it was great to offer participants on a recent 4 day Process into Practice course the opportunity to come up with their own metaphor for the PB Process.
Many thanks to all involved in this discussion and for allowing me to publish the photos below. As you can see, one group went for a Cheeseburger with the top and bottom bun representing the two themes and the cheese reminding them of the language of safety as it glues the burger together. The photo shows how they linked the rest of the process.
I continued these theme and imagined the introduction of a slice of gerkin could lead to some strong feelings, thoughts and behaviour and also realised that there are lots of unwritten rules regarding the consumption of 'junk food'! The option of additional toppings, contents and where you might purchase your burger from could represent the 7 strategies and a good strong network hand could be needed to hold it tight.
Another group chose to illustrate the Process as a road map and as you can see from the photo below this was another great way to highlight how the language of safety runs the whole way through the PB 'journey' as well as how useful the rest of the process and strategies can be in helping a person to reach their destination safely.
Any more ideas out there?

Hi there,
I was starting to think I was alone in both enjoying and finding it useful to invent ways of representing the PB process visually/symbolically and then a couple of recent 'events' may indicate this is perhaps not the case.
Firstly, some evaluation feedback from a recent PB Foundation course went like this in response to the question ‘If this training was a fruit or vegetable, (or anything else for that matter), what could it be & why?’: “I’m sorry, my brain does not work like this – a fruit is a fruit, a vegetable is a vegetable and a training course is a training course which I can fit around everything else – oh I get it, it would be a scarf!"
And then a good friend and PB Buddy who consistently uses PBs with the children she works with and also those who share her home forwarded me the picture below. One of the little girls she lives with has really embraced the PB process and thoroughly enjoys highlighting inconsistencies with the language of safety in both spoken and written forms of communication. She decided that the PB process could be represented as a Pizza as follows:
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with the wider PB community and helping me to see ‘it’s not just me!’

One of the little girls she lives with has really embraced the PB process and thoroughly enjoys highlighting inconsistencies with the language of safety in both spoken and written forms of communication. She decided that the PB process could be represented as a Pizza as follows:
- The base of the pizza represents the Language of Safety as it supports the whole process.
- The melted cheese represents the Unwritten Rules as they can stick.
- 3 slices of peppers remind me of the fact that we have feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
- 2 mushrooms significantly placed on the pizza remind me of the 2 themes: Theme 1 'We all have the right to feel safe all the time' and Theme 2: 'We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.'
- By ensuring there are at least 7 pieces of the pizza when sliced can mean each slice can be a reminder of one of the 7 strategies: Theme Reinforcement - with Theme 1 mushroom on, One Step Removed, Network Review - with Theme 2 mushroom on, Protective Interruption, Persistence, Risking on Purpose and The Language of Safety.
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with the wider PB community and helping me to see ‘it’s not just me!’

Hi Di,
Agree totally regarding a further edition or ROP.
The person who designed the PB Pizza will be 8 years old next month! Wow
A PB Champion of the future perhaps? (And already championing PBs today).
