Words at Work? was created by Sally Ann Hart
Hi There,
Most days I get an email from a website called Upworthy and most days there's something there that fits with PBs, so not really sure why it's taken me so long to suggest other PBPeople might want to take a look. Today's gem, in my opinion, is a subject which I feel really strongly about - Words! And when training PBs I spend a lot of time talking with people about the effect certain words have on people. I'll definitely be using the example below during training next week and hope you find it useful too.

Fabulous examples Sally Ann. I don't get 'upworthy' regularly, only when I see posts on facebook (for example). I will try and save these photos for use and discussion on training. Very powerful in thinking about 'PC' language and why thinking before we speak is helpful for ourselves and others. Rather than just being mindful of what (someone thinks ?!? - who is that person/people?) we 'ought' to say or not say.

Language is also something that fascinates me and I feel is so important to have an understanding of the effect it has on others and ourselves. In the PB's groups I have been doing for years with young people between the age of 14 and 18, I always thought that putting the language of safety at the beginning of day 1 was not the right thing to do. This was because at that point we are trying to engage a group of youngsters who could be turned off very quickly. However more recently (last couple of years) we have placed it right at the beginning of the process and used it as so often described as; the glue that binds it all together. The feedback we have had has been very positive from our young people, often describing it as the most important thing that they will be taking away from the workshop. So thanks Sally Ann, I have never heard of this web site before but I think I will be using it in training and in practice :)
