I came across this 'blog'/ journal piece about travelling in the quiet carriage of a train......with a 7 month old baby. Really highlights the perceived expectations of parents/babies and other passengers in terms of behaviour, noise levels and anticipated feelings and responses of others should the 'unwritten rules' not be adhered to by everyone (babies included).

Interesting perspective on an every day occurrence (there are other places which similar 'unwritten rules' apply, I think).

Hi Judith,
Thanks for this - brought back a whole range of feelings for me about the judgements some people make regarding what makes a 'good' parent (and baby). Can almost hear the tuts.

Yesterday I was sent this link to a podcast called 'The 7 things you're not supposed to talk about', which is a conversation between a journalist and her mother and a classic example of how Unwritten Rules can be bequeathed to us from our parents/families. The great thing is that we can choose whether or not to accept them!
The podcast is just under an hour - the first 5 minutes says so much.
Happy listening, laughing and learning,
SA
