Travel Size PBs was created by Judith Staff
I spoke with a friend last night, she was feeling concerned as her child is going for an overnight camp with a ‘club’ she attends. The ‘club’ is over a hundred years old and historically has had its reputation marred over the years because of some of the people who worked as leaders and their unsuitability for working with children.
My friend felt worried about her child’s safety and has heard me mention Protective Behaviours. She said she felt compelled to speak to the child about people who harm children. Remembering that we can’t ‘scare people into feeling safe’, I suggested two questions as a travel-sized PB Kit which the child could take in her case for the overnight stay. Firstly, “How would you know if you weren’t feeling safe? What physical feelings might happen in your body to tell you something wasn’t right, those Early Warning Signs?”; and then “What would you do to get help to feel safer again? Who would you ask? Who’s on your network in the club?” I also spoke with my friend about Unwritten Rules and ‘manners’ and making sure the child knows that if she needs help she can feel empowered to ask and not feel inhibited by the notion that children ‘shouldn’t’ challenge adults.
I hope my friend’s child is able to tuck the mini-PB kit into her bag and can have a lovely stay at camp, full of fun and adventures, and that my friend can feel less worried, knowing her child now knows what to do to help herself feel/stay safer.

Good work Judith :)
Two simple questions which could be put back to back on a laminated bookmark or something similar for someone to glance at without drawing attention to themselves if feeling vulnerable. Great idea.
