I was just wondering if anyone else has come across a soft furry toy creature called a 'beat baby'? As far as I'm aware there were introduced around 5 years ago and have recently been used to support the Every Child a Talker initiative. Essentially they are a cute little curled up bush baby with a magnet at either end so it can stay curled up until it hears something that helps it want to uncurl - the 'handler' has to help with this movement and it can look really lifelike in the right pair of hands. Currently they are used to help children develop their speaking and listening skills and also a sense of rhythm, hence the term 'beat'. But I have been using mine to suggest what feeling safe might feel like and explore the continuum of safety. I showed it to a friend and it has set her imagination soaring so she's now in the process of writing 7 stories with each one focusing on one of the PBs strategies.
I'm the proud owner of 3 bbs at the moment although one will be venturing off with my daughter in July when she goes travelling - apparently it helps her to feel safe!
Would be good to hear if anyone else has used these to promote PBs or has any other new ideas. (If you want to take a look at them you can see them at www.lawrenceeducational.co.uk I bought my first one with a story cd - loved the beat baby, didn't like the story

Still enjoying using 'Brian' as I like to call him and felt pleased that some people I was working with this week also saw the relevance of this resource as an example of using one-step removed to illustrate feeling safe and respectful touch. Unfortunately 'Brian' has undergone a bit of a colour transformation as a green marker pen replaced without a lid found its way into his fur. Could be a way into a discussion with children though regarding choice about hair cuts/colour/ear piercing?
Just checked pricing and still looks like the best prices are through Lawrence Educational
And their Summer Sale starts on 1st August, (might still need to check p&p rates?)
