I did some work with a group of nursery aged children last week on Early Warning Signs. We had a visit from Jack (a puppet) and Jack was asking the children to guess how he felt when he watched scary Scooby Doo cartoons and also when he went for his pre-school booster injections.... The children came up with lots of EWS and when asked to 'draw' them, they all decided a 'squiggle' would suffice to represent the 'sign' :silly:
After, we read a book called Walking Through the Jungle and we felt our heartbeats and noticed our breathing and our other EWS as we swam from a spouting whale, slipped away from a growling polar bear, ran from a hissing snake and managed to escape all the other animals who were "Chasing after me, chasing after me!"
Lots of fun, I thought, and I felt amazed at how many EWS the children (aged 3-4) could think of (and 'draw')!

Thanks for sharing this Judith - it reminds me of a little boy describing how it felt like he had a 'scribble' in his head. And a little girl saying she felt like she had a washing machine in her tummy. Fantastic descriptions in my opinion.

This reminds me of some work I recently did with a family (5 children under 10) during which we read We're going on a Bear Hunt. The children were able to consider and identify so many EWS that the family could have had in the different situations as well as identifying the need to tell when they were not feeling safe. They only really need to know what their own EWS is/are and be able to act on them.
