Apostrophes was created by Steve H
At the recent PBPeople Trainers Meeting the topic of apostrophe-s grammatical convention was raised, particularly relating to the term "Trainers Directory". On this site we refer to the Trainers Directory, and it was suggested that it might be more correct to include an apostrophe in "Trainers".

This is your Administrator's take on the subject...

All possibilities could be correct depending on the intended meaning....
  1. Trainer's Directory - this would be a directory belonging to a Trainer (singular)
  2. Trainers' Directory - if the plural noun is used, and possession is implied, the apostrophe would go after the "s"
  3. Trainers Directory - a Directory OF or FOR Trainers (plural), no possession implied
A good summary of the apostrophe conventions can be found at grammar.about.com

For the purpose of entitling the website's directory, I don't think a phrase implying possession is required, therefore no apostrophe. To me the actually argument is more whether, when shortening "Directory Of Trainers" (which could be the clearest form albeit cumbersome for a title), one should use "Trainer Directory" or "Trainers Directory". I don't know of a rule for this....a home for dogs would be a "Dogs Home" and not "Dog Home", but conversely a file for cards would be a "Card File" and not normally a "Cards File".

If anyone has opinions on the subject, we'd love to hear them. :)

I like Trainers Directory or Directory of Trainers, no apostrophes. Very clearly explained and illustrated :)
Well done administrator!

Personally I think for clarity "Directory of Trainers" - it is what it says it is.

Thanks for the feedback :cheer: . I've changed the Directory heading title from "Protective Behaviours Trainers Directory" to "Directory of Protective Behaviours Trainers".

Where it's used like that as a heading I'll keep to the "Directory of Trainers" convention, but I think in informal conversational use (like meeting notes) the term "Trainers Directory" would be acceptable too.
